How committed is Germany? Latest findings from the Volunteer Survey

What is the German Volunteer Survey?

The German Volunteer Survey is the central nationwide study on voluntary
engagement. It has been conducted every five years since 1999 and is based on surveys of more than
27,000 people aged 14 and above. It shows how many people are involved in volunteering, in which areas
they are active and what differences there are in terms of age, education or gender. In this way,
the survey highlights how volunteering is changing in Germany.

Why are the results important?

The latest data from the 2024 survey shows that voluntary work remains at a high level,
even if there have been slight shifts. Many volunteers are investing more time again and
plan to continue their voluntary work. The survey thus provides important guidance for politicians,
organisations and anyone involved in voluntary work – or who would like to become active themselves.
