Recognising voluntary work: ideas for practice
More than a third of all Hamburg residents are involved in voluntary work. This voluntary
commitment enriches the community and in many cases has become an integral part of the association or
project. Working effectively with volunteers in a non-profit organisation
also means making visible the commitment of those who contribute their time, knowledge and
passion, and recognising this commitment individually in our daily interactions.
Recognition can take many forms, and there are numerous ways to bring joy to volunteers
and show them appreciation! Whether personally, through structural
framework conditions at the place of engagement, or publicly! We have compiled a few examples
here:
Personally in the team
- Saying thank you in everyday life,
- taking a coffee break together and chatting,
- giving a bouquet of flowers for a birthday,
- sending a card at Christmas.
Structurally within the organisation
- Be open to volunteers' ideas and input.
- Plan team meetings together with volunteers.
- Offer training opportunities.
- Invite volunteers to a "thank you party".
- Organise a summer party or Christmas party and publicly honour the volunteers.
- Hold reflection or feedback meetings with volunteers.
Publicly in Hamburg
- apply for the Hamburg Engagement Card,
- submit proof of engagement in Hamburg,
- nominate volunteers for honours, e.g. at City Hall
